Flying Insect Removal and Prevention

Flying insects in any home or business aren't just a nuisance, some flies such as bluebottles and house flies can contaminate foodstuffs. Many moths such as the common clothes moth can destroy many natural fabrics - including wool and leather. Other flying insects such as wasps and hornets can be a particular problem due to their ability to sting, cause at minimum a mild pain all the way to death in the worst circumstances.

Below are a few of the most commonly found flying insect pests dealt with by S K Pest Control.

Wasps

As we enter summer months, wasps become a bigger and bigger nuisance. Frequently forming nests in roof spaces, cavity walls, and sheds - often at height and very difficult to reach.

Wasps become particularly aggressive in summer if disturbed they will attack and sting without hesitation - which can result in medical problems for those with allergies. This change in behaviour is directly related to the wasps change in diet - from mainly insects to the sweet and sugar rich fruits, and our food and drinks that go hand in hand with the better weather.

Treatment of a wasps nest is generally quick, depending on access to the nest, though as the products used can aggravate the insect a clearance radius should be set up around the nest for at least 2 hours. Our experts will advise you of this upon treatment.

Hornets

Hornets (pictured above killing a honeybee, is much larger and much more aggressive than the Wasps we find in the UK.

The European Hornet is generally 30-40mm in length, and tend to be more reddish brown than wasps. As with wasps they build their nests in roof spaces, cavity walls and sheds.

The sting of a hornet is a lot more toxic than that of a wasp, occasionally resulting in fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, heading, fainting and even convulsions.

Flies

There is a large verity of 'fly' in the UK. S K Pest control are equipped to deal with all species.

Fly control is essential to maintain a heathy and hygienic home or workplace. Flies like damp and warm conditions to lay their eggs and often cause the most nuisance in late summer and autumn as they try to find a suitable location to overwinter.

Flies cans carry harmful bacteria and diseases such as -

  • E.coli
  • Dysentery
  • Gastroenteritis

There are several methods of controlling and preventing fly infestations, one of our experts will be happy to discuss further.

Moths

There are more types of moth in the UK than any other pest, the most commonly found to cause issues are -

  • Brown House Moth
  • Case-Bearing Moth
  • Common Clothes Moth
  • White-Shouldered House Moth

Most of these make their homes within our houses and businesses, some don't actually cause the issue, more so their larvae -

The Brown House Moth and the Common Clothes Moth lay their eggs on natural materials (wool, feathers, even leather!) and when they hatch the larvae devour the material for at least 6 weeks.

The White-Shouldered House Moth specialises in feeding on a huge range of plant material, such as seeds, thatched roofs, dry vegetables, and even wine bottle corks!
