Wasps
As we enter summer months, wasps become a bigger and bigger nuisance. Frequently forming nests in roof spaces, cavity walls, and sheds - often at height and very difficult to reach.
Wasps become particularly aggressive in summer if disturbed they will attack and sting without hesitation - which can result in medical problems for those with allergies. This change in behaviour is directly related to the wasps change in diet - from mainly insects to the sweet and sugar rich fruits, and our food and drinks that go hand in hand with the better weather.
Treatment of a wasps nest is generally quick, depending on access to the nest, though as the products used can aggravate the insect a clearance radius should be set up around the nest for at least 2 hours. Our experts will advise you of this upon treatment.
Hornets
Hornets (pictured above killing a honeybee, is much larger and much more aggressive than the Wasps we find in the UK.
The European Hornet is generally 30-40mm in length, and tend to be more reddish brown than wasps. As with wasps they build their nests in roof spaces, cavity walls and sheds.
The sting of a hornet is a lot more toxic than that of a wasp, occasionally resulting in fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, heading, fainting and even convulsions.
